Slumdog Millionaire

The movie's ending song was still running when I was already logging into my whatever. Slumdog Millionaire is one piece of splendid research and deliverance. I don't remember when I last enjoyed every single moment of a movie to this extent. The way the slums of Mumbai have been portrayed makes you build an exact picture of what the reality might hold. The life of people in those slums is more awful than I could ever imagine. No safety, no direction, just living for the heck of it. There's nothing but s**t in their lives. It made me believe the saying more than before that "Its a sin to be born poor". Though its worth pondering why hollywood was closer to real India while bollywood couldn't come up with a subject which was dwelling right here with us, but its still appreciable that a subject like this was thought and executed, that too, so well. All I can say to summarize is - A must-watch!
Great work Mr.Boyle!

Rarely a novel when portrayed into a movie meets the expectation but watching Slumdog.., I can assure the justice has been done(though not given a chance to read Q and A).
The movie, beyond any doubts z a must watch!!
Kudos to da team!!

As the movie gets nominated for Oscar, there is a change of comments that fills me in.
As you rightly said, "Slumdog Millionaire is one piece of splendid research and deliverance", the team needs to be praised for the in depth portay(and that too not by Indians) of the slums and India we are in process of changing since our Independence.
But there is a bit of everything we've seen before, there has been a lot of Indian movies like this but go unnoticed!

I am in awe of the speculation that seems to bother you and its blatant enough. With the movie, I was taken aback by the way the idea has been portrayed and presented, the skill and talent of the movie, as a movie.
Though its nominations in Oscars while Taare Zameen Par out of the nominations being well deserving does accelerates the belief that the white people only like to see India poor and miserable ignoring its incredible progress at all fronts over the years!

slumdog is a piece of splendid research ??? I mean, i coudnt disagree more with u. It will get away with all the so called cinematic liberties and will win an oscar as well...which is a shame.
Yes, they are born poor, they are in slums, their life is in deep s**t.And its sad that some people dint knew bout it b4 the "slumdog"...and it takes a Danny Boyle, who directs a movie , which is so shabby in the later parts, to show us the ugly belly of india...
And Indians havent made a movie on this subject??
Dharavi...heard it ? sudhir mishra directed it, 1992. Or even salam bombay?
sorry for coming so hard, but then it isnt a movie that should not be lavished with so much praise...it doesnt deserve it..

It indeed z a piece of splendid research, coming from not-an-Indian director. We are familiar with the situations, we see the part of them everyday in our lives, and there were some parts in the movie, even I waz unaware of(being an Indian).
Would you be able to cover the situations in Gaza unless you dedicate a part of YOU to it??

well "not coming from an Indian director" line doesnt give him any liberty to away with some of the poor stuff he managed to dish out, which isnt a piece of any kind of research.
whats the piece of research that has got u going for this movie ?
leave the poverty thing behind for a moment, treat it just as a premise for a story..and then see if there is anything called research gone into the movie.

Priyesh said...

As for the Gaza parallel which u have drawn...I am saying make a movie on any theme, go ahead and do it....dedicate a part of YOURSELF to it not in order to make money out of it but to show what really is going around in there with real solid research...

Vernika said...

well, the story of the movie might not be a new concept for us, the Indians, but to the whole world out there, it indeed z!!
Danny's work z praise-worthy if not the movie!!
and moreover, its the individual judgement!!
And as per Gaza thing, one needs to put in effort in what one does, whether to make money or not..to dwell money out of the concept u need to put in effort n otherwise as well!!
In all, don't get all senti on Slumdog.., it might not be your type, but there are several others!! Move on!! :p

Priyesh said...

an individual judgement it is and its a nice way to put things when u dont have anything left to say..and his work isnt praiseworthy by any stretch of imagination. IMO shud go and watch it again and may be then u will understand what m trying to say....
and getting senti on slumdog isnt my idea...saying the movie isnt my type and asking me to move on isnt right on ur part...just because someone soesnt agree with u it doesnt mean they should MOVE ON...

Vernika said...

It z an individual judgement, I find Danny's work as praiseworthy, how else would you define the portray of a movie which can't be differentiated from an Indian movie unless u actually know the names behind it!! I would have categorized it as yet-another-Indian movie if it hasn't been Danny Boyle and if you haven't, then there comes individual judgement!!
and I din't ask you to MOVE On..coz we differ here, if it had been the case, we haven't been arguing over it on three different blogs, in three entirely different posts!!

Wohho!! Just discovered the hot discussion!!
@Priyesh
I accept your view that movies like Dharavi and Salaam Bombay are not accoladed as Slumdog but then keep aside the world, did Indians themselves consider it worthy enough to send them across the seas for oscar or any other nomination? To win laurels, one needs to showcase the work. And Slumdog, being a non-Indian production has all the publicity thing taken good care of.
Moreover, for someone the question might hold absolute sense that what did Lagaan deserve to get oscar nominated? It was accepted in the nominations despite the fact that it were the whites who lost the battle at the end of the movie and tasted humiliation.
Its all about the way the things are presented and promoted. As of research, I appreciated it because, as Vernika said, the aspect of that life of Indian slums was absolutely new to me being an Indian!

@ aashima..
err...salam bombay was nominated for oscars in the best foreign film catagory..i dont remember the year..may be 1988. It has been showcased well i think..
And c'mon guys, do u really believe oscars is a criteria for any movie's greatness?? They are nothing but a sham..so lets put aside oscars..
and again the research thing...wish i could have said anything else...boyle got so many facts..yes he did put in effort, but i think u will agree with me when i say, a director will get best out of his actors and researchers...dint he falter there? i mean just showin us the slums it doent mean the reseacrh is awesome. For thw past 2 days i have been questioning the MOVIE MAKING not the story or povertty or wat has it done for enlightening all of us...

Priyesh said...

@perky

u said it all yourself between the lines. all the praise because a gora has made it, if it had been RGV making this or any other maker, we would have said, "paagal hai yeh, yeh kya movie banayaa hai" And RGV has started making bad films... :P

Vernika said...

Its not a gora making it, its about a gora covering well a subject not-much-known to him, covering well a place he has not been much familiar with and covering well the environment he has not grown up into!!

Priyesh said...

and it is so great to see u not answering any of the points i raise
:P
watever....ohkay..
then y have u conveniently forgotten to give credit to loveleen tandon, the co-director ?? wat wrong she did do ?? and btw..talking bout environs he has not grown and not familiar and all, he should never ever try to put together a song and dance sequence. jai ho was reduced to a silly dance routine..

And thats it.. its not at all possible for a mere mortal like me to take on two females. So I give up my efforts, m not as dedicated as boyle :P
but i stick to my point that this is a movie, which does not deserve so much praise and i take ur point of effort made but i hope u watch this movie again as a viewer not in its awe and may be then u will get wat m trying to say...Phew !!

@ aashima

keeping slumdog aside,Loved the way you write things in general espp the pieces on 26/11 were quite good..found lots to learn.
keep up the good work :)

Aashima said...

I completely agree with your point.. oscars are no sole criteria to judge the cinema, they are just a way to appreciate that too in their own terms! We should be contended with our own set of award ceremonies!
And with that, lets end the never-ending debate! :P

Thanks a lot for those great words for my posts. Good or bad, I'll sure keep writing. :)
